Donor Advised Fund

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is the primary philanthropic tool used by individuals, families and corporations at Seattle Foundation. There are many different types of funds available depending on your goals and circumstances. You can learn more about those options below.

Creating a Donor Advised Fund with Seattle Foundation brings together your passion and our insights to create the impact you wish to have - whether in your backyard or around the world. DAFs are fueled with cash, stock or real estate, and then in partnership with your Seattle Foundation Philanthropic Advisor, are distributed to the causes you care about.

Flowchart: Donor transfers stock or cash to a Donor Advised Fund and the donor advised fund makes charitable distributions.

Benefits of a Donor Advised Fund

  • Establish a flexible vehicle for annual charitable giving
  • Benefit from a more tax and cost efficient alternative to a private foundation
  • Obtain a charitable income tax deduction in the year of your gift
  • Experience deep community insight, effective philanthropic advising and judicious stewardship of the assets you give, thanks to our expert staff and investment partners

How a Donor Advised Fund works

  1. You make an initial, irrevocable gift of cash, stock or real estate, to fund a DAF at Seattle Foundation.
  2. The assets in your DAF grow tax-free and are carefully managed in one or more of Seattle Foundation's six smart investment pools.
  3. You make recommendations on grants to be made from your DAF, or get inspiration and expert insight on how to direct your giving from your Seattle Foundation Philanthropic Advisor (as much or as little as you would like).

Flexible options as unique as you are

We offer funds that are directed by individuals, couples, families, and corporations. Fund structures involve different minimums and different fees, depending on the type you are interested in. Whether your plan is to make grants yourself annually from your DAF, work closely with your Philanthropic Advisor to find new organizations serving causes dear to you or build a family fund involving a formal grant application process for organizations and the opportunity to engage many generations in giving, we likely have a fund that will meet your needs.
