Make a Will, Make a Plan

Your estate plan is a powerful tool that can capture your values and make a meaningful impact on the people and causes you care for. Your plan often begins with a will - your planning tool that expresses your wishes for allocating your assets after your passing.

As part of creating your will, you might be considering how to leave a legacy of impact through charitable giving. A partnership with Seattle Foundation can help direct that philanthropy to benefit our region and the causes you care most about!

Legacy Philanthropy at Seattle Foundation

Your giving can continue after your lifetime through a bequest or other legacy gift. You can choose to open a fund during your lifetime that you give out of through the years and then is fueled by a legacy gift, or open a fund for the first time upon your passing. Whatever you choose, we are here to help guide you in setting up a gift structure that powers your legacy, whether in the short term, or as a permanently endowed fund. Again, no matter what route you choose, one of the easiest ways to accomplish this goal is through a bequest that outlines your intentions to support your fund with a legacy gift, or open a new fund upon your passing funded with certain assets.

What are the benefits of making a bequest?

  1. You leave a lasting legacy to be remembered
  2. You lessen the potential burden of taxes on your family
  3. You retain the ability to revise your bequest later in life

How do I make a bequest in my will?

A bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift be made to family, friends or Seattle Foundation as part of your estate plan.

When making a bequest, what are my options?

A bequest can be made in several ways:
  1. You can gift a specific dollar amount or asset
  2. You can give from the balance or residue of your estate
  3. You can make a beneficiary designation of certain assets

Your estate planning attorney can help you make this a reality.
